KID number
KID (kundeidentifikasjon) is a structured Norwegian payment reference used so a payee can match an incoming payment to the right customer, invoice, or claim. KID values include a check digit and are validated according to the payee’s banking agreement, commonly with Mod10 or Mod11. The correct length and method come from that agreement, not from the invoice amount.
Why this matters when you invoice
A valid KID reference can help automate payment matching and reduce manual reconciliation. The check digit only verifies the arithmetic rule; the payee's own agreement decides which KID structure customers should use.
Where it appears
KID belongs in the payment instructions or reference field on a Norwegian invoice when the seller's payment arrangement uses it.
Validate the method your agreement specifies
A company uses Mod11 KID references in its payment agreement. Before sending the invoice, it validates the reference with Mod11. Choosing Mod10 simply because it also produces a check digit would not satisfy an agreement that requires Mod11.
Common mistakes
- Guessing Mod10 or Mod11 instead of checking the payee's agreement.
- Treating a valid check digit as proof the bank will accept the reference.
- Using an arbitrary invoice number as KID without the configured structure.
Calculate or validate a KID number
Use the Norway KID tool with the method required by your payment setup.
InvoiceCraftly can calculate or validate a KID check digit for the selected method, but the payee's bank agreement determines the required method and length.
