What gets encoded
Pre-fills the transfer for the payer to confirm
The QR code can pre-fill an EPC/SEPA Credit Transfer with the beneficiary name, IBAN, optional BIC, optional EUR amount, purpose code and one payment reference. It does not authorize, submit, settle or confirm a bank transfer.
Understand the payment flow: Payment QR, SEPA Credit Transfer, payment reference, IBAN, and BIC / SWIFT code.
Compatibility
Banking-app support varies
The QR follows the EPC format for SEPA Credit Transfer initiation, but individual banking apps decide whether and how they support scanning. Test the downloaded QR with the banking apps relevant to your customers before publishing it broadly.
Invoice safety
Keep readable payment details beside the QR
A QR image can be damaged, unsupported or replaced. Keep the beneficiary, IBAN, amount and reference readable on the invoice so the payer can compare what their banking app decoded.
SEPA payment QR code FAQ
What is an EPC/SEPA payment QR code?
An EPC/SEPA payment QR code follows the European Payments Council's EPC069-12 guidelines to encode a SEPA Credit Transfer so a compatible banking app can prefill the beneficiary, IBAN and other transfer details for the payer to review.
What can the QR contain?
The beneficiary name, IBAN, optional BIC, optional EUR amount, an optional four-character purpose code, and one payment reference: either a structured reference or free-text remittance text, not both.
Does scanning the QR send money automatically?
No. Scanning only prefills a transfer in a compatible banking app; the payer still has to review and confirm it before sending. Generating the QR does not send the bank details to an InvoiceCraftly backend.
Is the amount optional?
Yes. Leaving the amount blank lets the payer enter or confirm it themselves; every other included detail still needs the payer's review.
When is BIC used or optional in the supported EPC version?
This tool generates EPC QR code version 2, where BIC is optional for many domestic SEPA transfers but some banks or transaction types can still require it, so include it when in doubt.
What reference fields are supported?
A single payment reference: either a structured reference, such as a Creditor Reference/RF reference, or free-text remittance text. Only one can be used per QR code.
Can the QR be placed on an invoice?
Yes. After generating the QR, use "Use in invoice" to review and confirm the beneficiary, IBAN, BIC and reference before InvoiceCraftly adds them to the invoice.
Why might a banking app not recognize it?
Individual banking apps decide whether and how they support scanning EPC QR codes, so an app can reject or partially read a code depending on a missing BIC, unsupported characters, or its own scanning implementation. Test the downloaded QR with the banking apps relevant to your customers before publishing it.
How should the payer verify beneficiary, IBAN, amount and reference?
Compare the beneficiary name, IBAN, amount and reference shown by the banking app after scanning with the same details printed readably on the invoice before authorizing the transfer.
