How to correct an invoice you have already sent

Do not edit or delete an invoice you have already issued. The usual approach is to issue a credit note that references it and then, if money is still owed, issue a corrected invoice. National bookkeeping and VAT rules decide what is allowed, so check yours.

1. Create a credit note that names the original invoice number, the date and the reason for the correction.
2. Issue a corrected invoice if the customer still owes an amount, with its own new number.
3. Send both documents together and keep all three in your records: the original invoice, the credit note and the corrected invoice.

Fictional example: invoice INV-0042 billed 25 hours at 50.00 EUR (1,250.00 EUR), but 20 hours (1,000.00 EUR) were worked. You can issue credit note CN-0003 for the 250.00 EUR difference that references INV-0042, or credit INV-0042 in full and send a new invoice INV-0043 for 1,000.00 EUR. Which one fits depends on your accounting rules and what the customer has already paid.
